The idea of wanting to change hair color has fascinated humans since ancient times. For example, in ancient Greece people were exposed to the sun for hours using a special ointment to change the color of their hair. Later on in the 20th century hydrogen peroxide was introduced for the first time as a substance for hair color techniques.

The world of cosmetology is constantly changing, and sometimes it is not so easy to decide what is good for one’s hair without professional help from hairdressers. Our experts are highly trained to give you several tips about the difference between Highlights and Balayage as they  walk you through this transforming experience.

What are Highlights?

Lots of our clients want to obtain beautiful contrast between their base color and their preferred new shade. The procedure allows one to apply the color composition just to some strands on one’s head. Some clients prefer to add color in between highlights.

Highlights

There’s a misconception when it comes to highlighting hair, where people assume it means you have to end up looking like a blonde, but in fact, the stylists can brighten the hair color with an infinite number of shades like honey, reds, coppers, browns and the list goes on and on. As a whole, highlighting is not the color itself, it is a personalized technique for each client.

During this process foils are used and color will be applied in a creative and unique pattern creating dimension and texture. By utilizing foils it incubates the product allowing the stylist to have more control over the desired level of brightness and final result.

What Is a Balayage?

Bon voyage with balayage! Even the word itself hints to us that the French were involved here. They invented this technique, the word balayage translates to “sweeping”. This technique consists of sweeping the color on the surface of the hair in a free choice manner.

Balayage

Balayage color as a rule leaves out a thin bottom section. Then the hairdresser subsequently works his or her way up around the midsection and adds the final touches on the top part of the head in a natural ‘lived in’ effect, giving a different effect than highlights.

Balayage adds depth, dimension and special effect to your hairstyle as if your locks have been lightly sun-kissed.

The Difference Between Balayage & Highlights

  • The master of balayage paints the color directly into the hair in a sweeping motion rather than just applying a heavier saturation of color to the hair.
  • If your goal is to get a natural, combined and delicate look then choose balayage.
  • For a more glam and profoundly lightened appearance you would better ask for highlights.
  • In general highlights demands a lot of commitment; because when the strands grow out, they need renewal every few weeks.
  • Balayage is more universal. You keep growing your hair out. And it allows you to leave more space between hair coloring rendezvous.

Highlights are as a rule more smoothly placed across the head.

Both technique can be used to frame your face.
